Research topic: Political history of the Hungarian minorities

The aim of this project is to map the political history of the Hungarian minorities, came into being with the dismemberment of Hungary after World War I. Politics in our research is primarily understood as conscious action taken in order to define a community both internally through strengthening its cohesion and externally through „regulating” its relationship to the outside world, however the research also deals with issues of political organization and strategies in a more conventional sense. Our intent is to make a comparison between the different nation-states emerging from the ruins of Austria-Hungary and analyze the factors lying behind differences and similarities, hopefully contributing to a deeper understanding to nationalism and nationalist politics.

Main research topics of the project are: integration to the new framework, relationship to Hungary, Hungary’s policy towards the minorities, policies of the respective nation-states, regionalist tendencies among minority and majority, identity formation and politics of identity. The primary research is carried out on the politics of identity of the different actors and agencies in the multilateral field constructed by the Hungarian state, the respective nation states, the respective minorities and regional elites. Furthermore the research so far covered the history of the Hungarian People’s Alliance (1944-1953) in Romania, nationality politics of the early Ceauşescu-era (1965-1974), internal social processes of the Transylvanian Jewish community (1918-1940). The next stage of the project will tackle similar issues regarding Czechoslovakia.
